Öndög

on VOD

Öndög ’is of a simplicity that is rarely to be admired. The images leave a deep impression and tell a story that is cinematographically indelible.

Wang Quan’an won the Golden Bear in 2007 with ‘Tuya’s Marriage’. Just as in ‘Öndög’, the Mongolian steppe plays an important role in the film. ‘Öndög’ starts with the discovery of a deceased woman surrounded by a landscape of dried grass. An inexperienced policeman is ordered to guard the body, but soon a shepherdess and her camel come to keep him company. She makes advances and they make love in the icy cold. The woman soon finds out that she is pregnant. But can a baby change the way she relates to the rest of the world?

….a hugely engaging, disgressively structured piece that combines a cosmic sense of landscape with intimate character drama.
