Black Butterflies is a powerful animated film that highlights the urgency of the climate crisis. The three intertwined, true stories point to one of the most pressing social issues of our time.

Three women have to start new lives in another place after the climate crisis has destroyed their home. The region where Tanit lives in Kenya suffers from extreme drought, Shaila left India after floods, and Valeria lost her home in Sint Maarten due to a devastating hurricane. Yet, officially, there is no such thing as a "climate refugee."

In an accessible way, Black Butterflies draws attention to an extremely under-reported issue: climate refugees are still not legally recognized. The three true stories offer a representative portrayal of the many victims of climate change. They are justifiably shocking, but their stories do not become a preachy narrative. This animated documentary leaves a lasting impact about a problem which deserves to be publicized.
