‘Writing Hawa’ is an angry documentary in a number of positive respects. Yet, it is also an intimate film that explores what it feels like to become your mother’s friend.  Endearing and emotionally gripping.

At 53, Hawa has decided it’s time to learn to read, write, and start her own business. Forty years ago, at just thirteen, she was forced to marry a man thirty years older than she was. But when the Taliban seize control of Kabul, her dream is suddenly put into jeopardy. Hawa’s story is captured on film and narrated by her daughter, Najiba, a journalist.
