De film is gebaseerd op Priscilla's bestseller 'Elvis and Me' uit 1985. De Amerikaanse ontmoette de superster toen ze 14 en Elvis al 24 was. Ze stapten in het huwelijksbootje toen Priscilla 21 werd, en kregen één jaar later een dochter, Lisa Marie. Hun huwelijk strandde na zes jaar. Ter inspiratie keek Coppola onder meer naar beelden van hun trouwdag en dook ze diep in de jaren zestig-mode. Dat levert een intieme en weemoedige film op die verschillende kantelmomenten uit het leven van Priscilla Presley omvat.
