Marya Zarif and André Kadi use their determined and dreamy little girl Dounia to tell the traumatic journey of so many Syrian refugees from a child’s point of view, while at the same time summoning all the magic and beauty of the legends of the Arabic world. This magical animated film is full of hope and bravery.

Six-year-old Dounia is a cheerful, dreamy Syrian girl who lost her mother at a young age. When the regime arrests her father and bombs begin to fall on Aleppo, she is forced to leave her home behind.

She is accompanied by her grandparents and the kind of magic that comes from the wonderful stories her parents once told her. Together, they embark on a dangerous journey to find a new home, which Dounia is certain is waiting for them somewhere. The path is filled with obstacles, but Dounia finds courage and optimism in the love of her family, her grandmother’s recipes, and the winks of a princess!

This enchanting, appealingly animated story of a displaced child is aimed at family audiences but despite, or perhaps even because of, the picture’s fantasy elements, it could prove to be a disarmingly potent proposition for adult animation fans also.
