Fremont is een stadje in Amerika met een grote Afghaanse gemeenschap. Onder hen is ook Donya, die in haar thuisland werkte als vertaler voor het Amerikaanse leger en nu in een fabriek de spreuken schrijft die verstopt zitten in gelukskoekjes. Door wat ze heeft meegemaakt, slaapt ze slecht. Op een dag schrijft ze op een koekstrookje een mysterieuze tekst, met haar naam en telefoonnummer bij.

De hoofdactrice uit de film is zelf gevlucht uit Afghanistan, waar ze nieuwslezer was op de nationale televisie. De rol van Donya is haar eerste werk als professionele actrice, en dat doet ze onovertroffen. Het ritme van deze mooie zwartwitfilm is rustig en de prachtige muziek draagt bij aan de kijkervaring. Er zit ook een tikkeltje humor verweven in de dialogen, die ongetwijfeld een zachte glimlach op je gezicht zullen toveren. Als typische American Indie doet deze charmante film het erg goed bij de filmcritici.
